Great post! I recently was watching a video that said that 70% of the plants in the world's food diversity has been lost in the last 100 years. To me, finding great heirlooms and trading with others is my victory garden. Thanks Erin.
What a tragic statistic! Interestingly, in the 1940's USDA film that I referenced, they were encouraging families to use government-approved seeds for victory gardens, & praised how uniform the produce looked. As we know, heirloom varieties can have funky shapes & shorter shelf lives, so I wonder if some were being actively phased out of general circulation at that time? I can definitely get on board with your definition of a victory garden! The returning popularity of heirlooms & seed swaps is energizing. Thanks so much for reading, Britt!
