I, too, requested the return of the barbette or wimple as a fashion statement for those of us of a certain age--on Instagram a few months ago. There are two of us...do you think we could get something started?

Oh my gosh, Jenn, that is awesome! You are the true trendsetter then, & I'll be the follower. Idk why I wasn't following you on IG, but I just remedied that.

Ha! I think the only time I actually set a trend was in 5th grade when I decided to wear jingle bells in my hair elastics during Christmas and all the other girls copied me and all our jingling drove the teachers bananas. 😂 Thanks for connecting on IG! See you there!

That's a great story!

Another wonderful post! Your warmth and humor always puts a smile on my face—and the garden pics are icing on the cake.

Just think, if the barbette caught on, plastic surgeons could go out of business! But yeah—I don’t think there’s any getting past the Jacob Marley look.

What fun to see you featured in “Signs + Seasons”! The pic of all the family shoes lined up for St. Nicholas was a treat! 😊

Thank you so much, your consistently kind comments help to keep me going on here! I fear you're right-- between Jacob Marley & Big Plastic Surgery, I doubt we'd be able to get the barbette thing off the ground.

The dog almost managed to swipe this year's St Nicholas treats from the shoes; it was a close call.

Oh Erin, your writing is always so beautiful and tender and relatable. Also, in that bright blue November photo, I spy a Victory garden sign - which just tickles me!

I'm so sorry for your community's devastating loss; you've so wisely encompassed the challenges of these seasons. Have you seen the movie "Inside Out"? I thought it did such a good job of showing how multi-faceted our experiences & memories are as we grow older!

I LOVE Secrets of the Castle, and haha yes, the Eleanor style is so fantastic!!

Thanks so much for sharing about the new guild endeavor...and I'm glad the word "guild" got you too, especially because that's a word that gets me immediately on board for anything, too!

You’ve described it wonderfully: “Beautiful and tender and relatable…” So true!

Thank you for being so supportive, Susan!

You caught the Victory garden sign! That was my husband's decorative touch.

I had no idea how fascinating it would be to learn about medieval architecture; Ruth and the boyz are my favorites.

We love Inside Out in our house; it was really well done.

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. They really do mean the world.

We constructed a windbreak with tarps last night on the back porch. I know it won't do much for the dropping night temps, but it may save my vegetables from the destructive wind. Fingers crossed.

And powdered bronzer swiped along the jawline does wonders!

I hope your veggies were saved, Jennifer!

I am super ignorant about makeup, will definitely have to give that a try. Probably more socially acceptable than wearing a barbette... especially since the accessory is eerily similar to the Victorian kerchief around Jacob Marley's jaw in A Christmas Carol.

Ha, you're right, it does look like Marley's wrap!

I was a make-up artist for years, so I'll just mention that if you try the bronzer trick, use a brush with a fluffy head, not the powder puff that comes with the bronzer. Sweep along the jaw and under the chin. It pretty much removes 10 pounds and 10 years.

I shall attempt to perform this sorcery you speak of. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Also, THE NECK THING. I’m 52 this year and would like whoever stole mine to please return it.

LOL. I think mine was a gradual change and then all at once. I'm all about accepting age as it happens, but why the neck?!

Congrats on the anthology inclusion! And kudos to your daughter; I used to do a bang-on impression of the witch and never got to take it to the stage, so I’m thrilled for her performance. Sorry for your losses, especially such a young kid, and sympathy for the moth infestation! Your little lit-up town looks quaint. I’ve always thought the same about a candle and twinkly lights against the dark of winter. A mental warmth, right when we need it.

Thanks, Lisa! Can you still do the witch impression? We had 3 months of listening to our daughter perfecting her cackle. I don't really miss hearing it, but I'd hate for her to lose the skill!

Thank you for all your kind words, and yes- candlelight is so great this time of year.

When I was a kid, I had pretty well perfected WWW’s, “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too.” I bet your daughter can keep rocking her cackle if she practices just every once in a while!

Barbette may be a hard sell but wide leg jeans are back so in my opinion anything is possible! 🤣

I like the way you think! Fashion does tend to come back around.
