A Photo Update
Official Spring is not yet here, but I think the groundhog was right last month. We haven’t seen signs of such an early Spring for several years! Alternating rain and sunny afternoons with warmth, cloudless blue skies, and the return of song birds en masse, including our state bird, the robin. It’s the season of commonplace delights.
These herbs were left outside and at the mercy of the elements all winter, and they are growing afresh:
Growing from roots and bulbs that over-wintered:
Some buds in the mini orchard:
Possibly the best of all, flowers:
What are your favorite plants that grow near you this time of year? Where do you find them? A park or woodland trail? A pot in your apartment window? Planted in your garden? What other signs are you seeing of seasonal change?

The only surprise here was the basil: How do you account for that? Our particularly mild winter this year?
I love the sight of daffodils even though I realize they’re just pretty little statues and don’t feed native fauna. Witch hazel is my hero, though!
Hi! I searched Substack for other garden writers and found you. I actually love that you wrote Michigan in your signature line. Great idea and I'll have to steal that idea. It's important to know where a gardener is located. I love that you are in the States. You sure do love all the subtle changes in the garden as much as me. Off to subscribe.
